Regarded as home base for divers on Costa Rica’s north Pacific coast, Playa del Coco is the best access point to subsurface sites such as the Catalinas Islands and the Bat Islands, where huge manta rays, dolphins, giant sea turtles, tuna, mahi mahi, sailfish and even bull sharks are a common sight. There is excellent snorkelling around the islands just off Coco’s shores as well.
Back on shore, Coco is on the bigger end of the scale, as far as Guanacaste coastal towns go, with a well defined main street lined with restaurants with comfortable patios, bars to suit all interests and some of the best souvenir shopping in the area.
Many call Coco the top party spot in Guanacaste with enough bars and nightclubs to handle the huge groups of visitors who flock here every year to enjoy the beach and relaxed atmosphere. Along the strip and bordering the beach, you’ll find great prices on drinks, great music for dancing and you are sure to meet people from all around the globe on vacation here.
But if long and loud nights aren’t your cup of tea, not to worry – Coco also caters to those who want to get away from the noise of their life back home and take in the beauty and serenity that nature has to offer, with several secluded resorts nearby where you can wake up to the call of Costa Rica’s vibrant bird life and probably the guttural bark of a howler monkey or two!
